For most people around the world, the name Hershey means chocolate. Visitors notice streets with names like Cocoa Avenue and Chocolate Avenue and streetlights in the shape of Hershey Kisses. The factory and town, founded by candy entrepreneur Milton S. Hershey, is now a destination all its own.

Because of the success of his chocolate company, in the early 1900s Mr. Hershey created a planned community with streets lined with trees, water, sewer, electricity, telephones, and trolleys. A theater, library, and amusement park were built for the community, which mainly consisted of Hershey factory employees. Today, Hersheypark has become one of the top theme parks in the world.

Hershey also used his millions to create a world-famous school for orphan children that to this day remains one of the great examples of American philanthropy. In 1910 Milton and Catherine Hershey started their school with four orphan boys. (They had no children of their own.) In 1918, Hershey left his entire personal fortune to the school, making headlines in the New York Times. The statute dedicated to him in Founders Hall reads, "His deeds are his monument. His life is our inspiration."
